Authentic Illinois Pyrite Sun mined in the 1960s from the historic coal mines of Sparta, Illinois, USA — a locality that is now permanently closed.

Also known as Pyrite Dollars or Miner’s Dollars, these rare disc-shaped formations developed within ancient coal seams under extreme pressure, creating the signature radial “sunburst” pattern unique to Illinois pyrite. Unlike cubic Peruvian pyrite, Illinois Pyrite Suns form as flat, perfectly circular metallic discs — a geological anomaly found only in this region.

Because the mines closed decades ago, no new material is being produced. All genuine Illinois Pyrite Suns on the market today come from vintage collections and old stock, making them increasingly scarce.
