Rare Dragon Scale Calcite with Iridescent Chalcopyrite | Sweetwater Mine
“Dragon Scale” Calcite with Iridescent Chalcopyrite | Sweetwater Mine, Missouri
Approx. 296 g (0.65 lbs) | Approx. 3 x 3 in
A rare “Dragon Scale” calcite specimen from the Sweetwater Mine in Reynolds County, Missouri — one of the only known sources of this distinctive formation.
Sharp, overlapping calcite crystals create a scaled, reptilian texture across the surface. The entire formation is coated in natural iridescent chalcopyrite, flashing metallic greens, golds, bronzes, and deep oil-slick tones depending on the light.
The contrast is dramatic: glittering metallic surface over pale calcite interiors. Rugged, dimensional, and unmistakable.
Access to the Sweetwater Mine has been extremely limited due to flooding, making new material exceptionally scarce. Fewer than an estimated 1,000 quality specimens circulate among collectors.
This is a true mineral collector’s piece — bold, rare, and visually electric.
Origin: Sweetwater Mine, Reynolds County, Missouri
Material: Calcite with natural iridescent Chalcopyrite
Weight: Approx. 296 g (0.65 lbs)
Dimensions: Approx. 3 x 3 in
Natural formation. One-of-a-kind.
